Information for Candidates

The Linbury Prize 2019 r submissions are now closed.

The Linbury Prize is open normally to final year students and graduates from 2018 or 2019 from Theatre Design degree or postgraduate courses recognised on the website of the Society of British Theatre Designers ( or by the Performance Design Education Collective.

The Linbury Prize in 2019 also welcomes individual applicants who have studied in courses that deliver modules based in Performance Design. 

Applications will be accepted from students of any nationality, who intend to base their practice in the UK and provided they are officially resident in the UK and intend and have permission to remain so until the end of 2020.

Please note submitted Portfolios should be no smaller than A3 and no larger the A2. No more than 12 pages, 24 sides.

Prizes and commissions

£2,000 for each of the 12 candidates (the finalists) selected for the Linbury Prize Exhibition. This is intended to cover expenses incurred in preparation for the exhibition.

There will be four winners chosen from the finalists. Each receives a cash prize of £2,500.

The overall winner of the Linbury Prize for Stage Design 2019 will receive an additional £1,000 prize money.

The four winners will receive a commission to realise a production from the company for which they are chosen to work. The design commission fee is set at £4,500.

The deadline for applications will be 12 noon, Monday 1 July 2019.
First Selection Days will be 17 or 18 July 2019. Please note that reasonable travel expenses will be covered for interview only.
Final Selection Day will be end of July 2019 (exact dates tbc). Please note that reasonable travel expenses will be covered for interview only.
